You never know who is going to show up at our receptions. Here the Poetry Fox bangs out poems working off visitors’ prompts during an event as part of the 2017 Click Photography Festival.

horse & buggy press and friends

Sparking joy and conversation since 1996.

“Horse & Buggy Press And Friends” is the 500 square foot art and craft gallery at the front of our design and letterpress studio, located at 1116 Broad Street in Durham. Visitors will find work by dozens of artists and craftspersons in a variety of media. Most artists are from the Southeast, and over half are from North Carolina.

New work, and new artists, rotate in regularly to reward repeat visits, while we curate seven solo and thematic exhibits on the ‘main’ exhibition wall annually. In addition to museum-quality framed works throughout the space, visitors will find a bevy of affordable unframed works in the flat file drawers and print bins; well presented pottery, glass, jewelry, fibers, small-scale sculpture, and much more.

A bookstall carries not only H&B Press title, but artist monographs and exhibit catalogues from places like The Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art in Charleston, South Carolina and Candela Gallery in Richmond, Virginia; literary and art books by other small presses (including Yoffy Press, Zatara Press); and artists publishing their own books in exciting ways (including Sean Kernan, Heather Evans Smith, and Lori Vrba among many others). Basically interesting work you won’t find at most bookstores. Visitors are welcome to take a book and sit at the gallery table for a quiet moment.

The gallery is a fun and invaluable resources when you are looking to appoint a home or office, find a gift for a dear friend or loved one, or when its simply time to treat yourself. Our block of Broad Street is home to several restaurants including Metro 8 Steakhouse and The Loop on either side of us, Joe Van Gogh coffeehouse, Craven Allen Gallery and House of Frames, several hair salons, and the Green Room Pool Hall, so you will be rewarded for going up and down the block and parking is free and plentiful.

We host receptions every month or two, usually on Saturdays from 5–7pm as a doubleheader with Craven Allen Gallery down the block, often with guest musicians and performers out front or in the back, and always with adult beverages (thanks Fullsteam Brewery for being a longtime sponsor and providing our beer action and to new gallery sponsor Westgate Wines).

We happily give tours to groups. To be on our mailing list and receive monthly newsletters, simply drop me a line at dave at horseandbuggypress.com
